Chapter 13

Treasured

William and I have decided on a long engagement. We have already spent years together, but being together physically and able to communicate with our voices and bodies is new. We aren’t in a rush to make it official, especially when William is listed legally as deceased. He says his family broker can help with that, but it will take a few weeks. Thankfully, he’ll be a legal person before our baby is born so I can list him on the birth certificate.

I look down at my pear-shaped engagement ring and smile. I did end up taking Monday off of work and we went to a jewelry store at William’s insistence. We started to sort out his inheritance too, getting all that we needed together for our new life. His broker was certainly surprised to see him again, alive and all grown up. He had kept his word to the family and the money and home were still available to William. We didn’t go into many details, and he didn’t seem to need them. The broker explained that in his line of work, families occasionally go into hiding or fake their deaths, and it was better that he didn’t know why. Neither is the case for William, but I didn’t correct him.

Unfortunately, I couldn't take off today as well. George has been preparing for this client meeting and needs my help. I want to take it seriously, but I can’t stop grinning. I don’t know how much help I’ll be today with all this giddiness.

The office is certainly in for a surprise. We aren’t sharing the pregnancy yet, partially because I won’t one hundred percent believe I’m magically pregnant until I miss my period, but I also want to enjoy it in privacy for a few weeks. I’m not one to believe sharing your pregnancy early is bad luck—that’s such a personal decision for each couple to make—but I will not be quiet about my engagement.

Not that many people will actually care. I don’t have friends here, just people that are cordial, but at least I can enjoy being part of some nice gossip. I won’t deny it’s nice to be talked about. And when they see my man? They’ll be jealous. I don’t connect with people often, and I’ve gotten used to that, but knowing I have my ghost with me forever feels worth the loneliness of all the years before. This isn’t something anyone else will ever have or experience, and I feel so lucky.

I park and look at William, who insisted on coming with me to work. He can’t drive, so we made a list of things he can do in the area to get ready for life as a human. Well, he was never human, but to prepare his life as a living being again after so many years. He needed more clothes, a wallet, shoes, so much. It was pretty hilarious when we calmed down from our coupling to find there was nothing for him to wear.
